The Secret

About 2 hours ago, I finished watching the DVD of The Secret, the documentary that a lot of people have been talking about recently. A co-worker passed me her copy because she felt that I would enjoy its message.

The Secret basically isn't a secret at all. It's something we are all aware of in one form or another. The Secret focuses on the Law of Attraction, that is, what you focus on in your thoughts will manifest itself in your life. One part of the message that really struck a chord with me was that if you focus on what you don't want and don't have, you will continue to be bombarded with those things that you don't want and don't have instead of creating what you do want and being grateful for what you do have. I can see instances in my own life where that is absolutely true. One instance that comes to mind is several years ago when I was in a lot of financial debt. My focus at the time was "I wish I didn't have all of this debt." When I stayed in that mindset of  "I wish I didn't have this..." all I did was create more of it. Eventually I shifted my focus to getting rid of the debt instead of being mired in it, and over the course of 2 years or so, I was able to pay down the debt that I had created.

My one criticism of the DVD is that the creators made it sound like you can have everything you want if you just simply turn your focus to it. I don't fully agree with that. Channeling all of your energy to the things that you want is fine, but nothing is just going to fall out of the sky and into your lap. You have to put some work into it and put an effort behind creating what you want. It's not just going to magically appear out of nowhere.

Overall though, The Secret is worth a look or two. It contains a positive message that we all need to be reminded of when we get too lost in things that aren't worth getting lost in. I'd like to read through the companion book that expands on the DVD.
